Love these little jellyfish crocheted keyring critters! Not sure if it’s the stitched on grin that does it, but they make me smile so widely and are really simple to make!
I used a variety of colours and yarns but found a 100% cotton yarn with a 4mm crochet hook had the best results with the most definition.
Directions:
- Start withSwith a long tail of yarn and create a magic loop.
- SC 6 stitches
- Pull your magic loop tight with your yarn tail in front of your work.
- Row 2. Put 2 SC into each of your 6 SC so you will have 12 SC.
- Row 3. 1 SC then increase (2SC into 1) 1SC then increase all the way round until you have 18 SC.
- Row 4. 1 SC, 1SC,then increase, 1SC, 1SC, then increase all the way round until u have 24 stitches.
- Using a stitch marker to hold on to your loop, remove your hook and attach your keyring loop to the top of your project with the long tail. Stitch it on using a large eyed needle, loop several times then bring tail back to top of your work.
- Rows 5,6,7,8 SC 24.
- Row 9 SC 24 but only into the back loop of your Single Crochets.
- Use a stitch marker to hold your loop and it’s time to add your eyes and smile.
- Your last SC is the back of your project. Turn over and on the front of your project add 2 eyes just above the ridge you have just created, place them 4 stitches apart. Make sure the backs of the safety eyes are clicked on securely.
- Take your darning needle and black yarn pull the yarn through from inside the project next to one of the eyes. Take a straight line across to the second eye. Pull the yarn up 2 rows down and in the centre of your black line loop the yarn under your line, pull down and then go through the same hole. Tie off behind.
- Row 10. Now time to reduce your project, the reverse of how we started. 1SC, 1SC, Decrease (using only the front loop of your SC put your hook through 2 front loops and SC) 1SC, 1SC, decrease until you have 18 SC.
- Row 11. 1SC, Decrease, 1SC, Decrease repeat until you have 12 SC.
- Use a stitch marker to hold your loop and then use toy filler to stuff the head of your jelly fish.
- Row 12. Decrease into every stitch leaving you with 6 SC.
- Pull your yarn through but do not close the hole yet.
- Using more yarn do a slip stitch and chain 45 and tie off. Do this twice so you have 2 lengths of 45 chain.
- These are you tendrils. Using the darning needle thread the tendril and pull through just above the hole in the bottom of your jelly fish. Place them in opposite sides so they cross over.
- Then use the tail at the bottom of your work to close the hole.
- Using the darning needle thread your bottom tail through to the top of your work and pull firmly. This will create the shape of your jellyfish.
- Loop through a couple of times on the top and then feed back through to the bottom. Tie off but leave a long tail.
- Using the tail on the top of your jellyfish, thread onto you needle and feed through to the bottom of the work, try not to pull top hard to misshape the head.
- Use this tail to secure your 4 tendrils, thread through each of them and then tie off leaving the tail long.
- Trim your tendrils to the desired length and you have completed your jellyfish.
