Pin Magnet

I’m forever dropping pins during sewing projects or putting them down and losing them into the place where odd socks go. So I designed my own pin magnet!

This craft shows another use for the floral wrapping paper – link below to see how I made this.
You can use any tile for this project. Maybe you have some left over from tiling a bathroom or kitchen??

I bought 4 random tiles amongst the Scrap I purchased from Worcester Resource Exchange (wre.uk.com)

I thought about how I could re-use the tiles, they would have made great coasters as they were. Instead I used some of my floral paper, (link above on how to make this) and I made some magnetic pin holders.

What you need to make your own:

  • A tile
  • Sandpaper
  • Paper with your chosen design on
  • PVA glue
  • Scissors
  • Cork
  • Super Strong Thin Disc Magnets
  • Felt
  • Super Glue/ Hot Glue Gun
The cork pieces in the 4 corners offer a stable surface.

Directions:

  • Take your tile and give it a clean.
  • Sandpaper the surface of the tile, (this gets rids of any uneven surfaces and helps the paper stick to the tile.
  • Choose your paper. This could be old wrapping paper, pages from a vintage book or magazine. I chose a piece of my home made floral paper.
  • Place your tile face down on to the paper and draw round it with a pencil.
  • Remove the tile and draw a second line 5mm inside of the first line all the way around.
  • Cut out the paper on the inside line. (Your paper should sit on top of your tile with a border of the tile showing.
  • Cover your tile in PVA glue right to the edges and then stick your paper, patterned side up, to your tile. Smooth out any lumps and bumps and leave to dry for half an hour.
  • Cover the paper and tile in another coat of PVA glue and leave to dry overnight.
  • Seal with another coat of PVA or spray with a clear gloss to seal.
  • Place your tile onto a piece of felt and draw round with tailor’s chalk.
  • Cut out your piece of felt and place to one side.
  • Cut out 4 penny-sized pieces of cork (I used the ‘stick-on’ cork for stopping furniture legs slipping on surfaces).
  • Use a hot glue gun to stick these in the four corners of the underneath of your tile.
  • Then stick 2 Disc Magnets on the underside of the tile towards the middle with a small dot of hot glue.
  • Using PVA glue coat the underside of the tile and cover with the prepared felt.
