A simple handmade gift filled with meaning

How to Make a Pocket of Kindness
Sometimes the smallest things mean the most.
A Pocket of Kindness is a simple handmade gift—filled with handwritten notes and handmade gifts to remind someone they’re not alone, that they’re valued, and that someone is thinking of them.
It’s something you can make in an afternoon, but it can stay with someone for much longer.
Whether it’s for a friend going through a tough time, a birthday, or just a quiet “thinking of you” moment—this is a gift that speaks without needing many words.

💛 What You’ll Need
- Fabric (cotton, linen, or something meaningful—like a favourite colour or pattern)
- Ribbon or cord for the drawstring
- Thread
- Scissors
- Sewing machine (or you can hand sew)
- Small pieces of paper for your notes
- A pen
🧵 How to Make Your Drawstring Bag
Step 1: Cut Your Fabric
Cut two rectangles of fabric (approximately 20cm x 25cm). You can adjust the size depending on how big you’d like your pouch.
Step 2: Create the Drawstring Channel
Fold the top edge of each piece down (about 2–3cm) and stitch along the edge to create a channel for your ribbon.
Step 3: Sew the Sides
Place your fabric pieces right sides together and sew down both sides, leaving a small gap near the top on each side for the ribbon to pass through.
Step 4: Turn the Bag Right Side Out
Turn your bag inside out so the seams are hidden. You can press it lightly if you’d like a cleaner finish.
Step 5: Thread the Ribbon
Using a safety pin or bodkin, thread your ribbon through the channels on both sides so it pulls closed into a drawstring.

✨ Add a Personal Touch
To make your Pocket of Kindness even more special, you can add a small fabric panel to the front of the bag with a message.
This could be:
- A stamped phrase
- Handwritten text
- Or a personalised note for the person receiving it
For example:
“You are simply awesome”
or
a name, date, or short message just for them 💛
This turns your pouch into something truly one-of-a-kind.
💌 Creating Your Kindness Notes
The notes are the heart of your Pocket of Kindness.
They don’t need to be perfect—just honest.
Cut small pieces of paper and write a few uplifting messages. These can be read all at once or one at a time, whenever they’re needed.
Some ideas to get you started:
- “You are simply awesome”
- “The story isn’t over”
- “You’ve made it through 100% of your hardest days”
- “Rest is not failure”
- “In case nobody told you today—you matter”
Write from the heart—those are always the most meaningful.
🎁 Bringing It All Together
Fold your notes and place them inside your pouch.
You can gift it just as it is, or pair it with something small like:
- A bracelet
- A teabag or self-care item
- A handwritten card
It’s a simple gesture—but one that can mean everything.
📸 A Note on Making It Your Own
Every Pocket of Kindness will look a little different—and that’s exactly the point.
Use fabrics you love, colours that feel calming, and words that feel true to you. The beauty is in the individuality.
